Introduction

Welcome to the website for the SELF Research Group in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford. Under the Direction of Professor Herb Marsh, the SELF Research Group is the lead member of the international SELF Research network, encompassing 450 members from 45 countries across 6 continents and a network of satellite centres. The SELF research network produces a monograph series, hosts international conferences, and publishes research in leading international journals.

Its multidisciplinary rationale is that individuals who feel more positively about themselves in a particular domain are likely to be more successful; systems must simultaneously reinforce objective outcomes and self -beliefs (e.g., academic self-concept and achievement in education).

The Oxford SELF group has a particular focus on thodological/substantive synergies that draw on advanced quantitative methodology (e.g., multilevel modelling, structural equation modelling, and meta-analysis) in pursuit of substantive/policy-

oriented issues. It collaborates with other Oxford University Department of Education Research Groups in areas of mutual interest; provides support for research bidding and writing; hosts visiting scholars; runs a seminar programme and specialist symposia; offers in-house training events on statistical techniques; and hosts a special interest group for advanced quantitative analysis.
